New crayons? Check. A backpack that’s three times their size? Check. First day tears (from you, of course)? Double check.
Whether your kiddo is off to school for the very first time or you're just easing back into the routine after summer, this simple back to school checklist is here to help. As a former teacher turned family photographer, I know how exciting, and overwhelming, this season can be. Let’s make it easier, more joyful, and filled with sweet memories.

1. Start a Simple Morning Routine
A consistent routine sets the tone for smooth mornings. Use this simple back to school checklist to build a rhythm that works for your family. Something as easy as:→ Wake up→ Brush teeth→ Get dressed→ Breakfast→ Backpack
Try a few dry runs before school starts to help little ones adjust. Add visuals for younger kids that haven’t learned to read yet and keep it stress-free!

2. Prep Easy Lunches & Snacks
Don’t overcomplicate it. Your kids just want what they’ll actually eat. Keep lunch packing simple and predictable. Include 1 fruit, 1 protein, 1 fun snack, and a sweet note from you.
Make this step part of your simple back to school checklist the night before, less chaos in the morning, more smiles at drop-off. Bonus tip: Get your kids involved in packing their lunch. Ownership = fewer complaints!

3. Snap a First Day Photo
Of course, you’ll want to grab a “first day” pic before they head out the door! Whether it’s by the front porch, in the car, or with a chalkboard sign, capture the moment. It’s a milestone worth remembering.
But let’s be real, these photos are often rushed and chaotic. That’s where the next part of the checklist comes in…

4. Schedule a Back-to-School Mini Session
This is the part of your simple back to school checklist you didn’t know you needed but you’ll be so glad you checked it off!
These modern school portraits are full of personality, joy, and charm—everything that traditional picture day misses. And since we hold them two weeks after school starts, your kid will have settled into a routine (and their hair will still look great!).
-Fast and fun-Adorable, styled setup-Real smiles and sweet moments
As a former teacher, I love watching kids shine during these sessions. It’s a special way to celebrate this season and capture who they are right now.

5. Give Yourself Grace
You’re not going to remember every spirit day. The lunchbox might come home with untouched carrots. And that’s OK. This simple back to school checklist isn’t about perfection—it’s about starting the year with love, intention, and a little extra fun.
